Follow the ancient city walls along a picturesque bayside promenade.. The Scene
Pick up the path outside La Princesa, home of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, on a pleasant plaza lined by shady sidewalks, lush gardens, sculptures and kiosks. Tourists, joggers and stroller-pushing moms follow the quiet path along the massive city walls and rocky shore of the San Juan Bay. The 30-minute walk (each way) ends at El Morro fort. While the charming, well-kept path is uncrowded, a number of scrappy cats live along the trail.

The Draw
The peaceful path provides unbeatable views of the harbor, with boats of all sizes and the occasional dolphin. On the opposite side of the trail, the ancient city wall is punctuated by dramatic sentry boxes where guards once stood watch against pirates and invaders. The San Juan Gate, an enormous guarded entryway in the wall, leads to La Fortaleza, the governor's mansion. Benches and pleasant shaded sitting areas offer plenty of opportunity to rest.
